How To Catch Automatic Thoughts
Automatic thoughts are what they sound like: Thoughts that a person has automatically in response to a trigger, often outside of that person's conscious awareness. When associated with mental illness, these thoughts are often irrational and harmful. An important goal during CBT will be to identify and then dismantle these thoughts.
- CBT teaches you how to catch, challenge, and change flawed thoughts as well as identify and correct troublesome behavior patterns. For example, imagine your boss emails you saying she wants to
- Catch the first thought. If you can catch your negative thinking early on, then it will be much easier for you to stop it before it escalates into a big problem. Often something that starts out as a minor problem ends up being completely blown out of proportion.
- Automatic negative thoughts come from this less conscious stream of thoughts. Knowing what automatic negative thoughts are is only a start. The trickiest part of the process is learning to catch myself and identify the automatic negative thoughts.
- The earlier you can catch your negative thoughts the quicker you can swap them out for positive thoughts. Use the Elastic Band Trick Put an elastic band around your wrist and every single time you catch yourself having a negative thought, pull that elastic band and release.
